One of the more popular bits to come out of MADtv was the red carpet “reporting” that myself and good friend, the brave and hilarious Alex Borstein, logged from various fancy Hollywood premieres and award shows.

Remember when sitcoms had theme songs? So do me and my friend, Chad Kultgen, with whom I wrote Waiting to Die, a sitcom pilot shot this past pilot season for Sony/CBS.
Chad and I figured out what’s been missing from the network sitcoms of the past several years… the kickass theme songs.
Cheerful melodies like the ones that opened Family Ties, Growing Pains and Who’s the Boss not only provided a fitting score to soft lit photos of the show’s cast smiling warmly, but they also got you in the mood for the next thirty minutes. These uplifting tunes set the tone for shows about family, friendship and caring for one another.
Now since our show was about two lazy assholes who do whatever they want and don’t feel the need to try, living together in the same shitty apartment since graduating high school, we realized that we probably couldn’t sell the studio and network on a cheesy 1980’s style theme… and we didn’t… but as producers, we figured we should at least give it a shot. And besides, what could be more befitting of the terms; family, friendship and caring for one another than two drunk losers splitting rent?
So I called upon the the services of my colleague and friend, Emmy-winning composer of MADtv, Greg O’Connor, and together we wrote and recorded a theme song.
Greg plays every instrument on this track by way of his incredible keyboard and synthesizer skills, I sang and Chad just sorta stood there, cheering me on like John C. Reilly in the recording studio scene from Boogie Nights.
Enjoy the unofficial theme to Waiting to Die. It probably helped to ensure that we didn’t make the fall schedule.
